Our Methodology

Our consultants are thoroughly vetted through a formalized recruiting process and undergo a week-long training program hosted by our professional mentors. Each of our projects span the course of 10-12 weeks and are staffed with 3-4 consultants, 1 project manager, and 1 consulting director. Our methods of recruiting, training, and staffing our consultants has resulted in incredibly high client satisfaction and global recognition from our parent organization.

ReFED is a national nonprofit dedicated to ending food loss and waste across the U.S. food system by advancing data-driven solutions. 180DC NYU is working with ReFED to help with impact measurement methodology and monitoring and evaluation processes.

 

DataKind is a global nonprofit that harnesses the power of data science and AI in the service of humanity. 180DC NYU is working with DataKind to help with volunteer engagement and impact measurement strategies.

 
 
 

The American Red Cross of Greater New York (ARC-GNY) provides services that help communities respond to life threatening emergencies and disasters. This includes everything from smoke alarm installations in neighborhoods with a high risk of house fires to reuniting families separated by armed conflict. 180DC NYU is building a partnerships strategy for ARC-GNY to improve the cultural competency of their services over the next 5 years.

 
 

Edible Schoolyard NYC is a nonprofit organization committed to bringing Alice Waters’ vision to New York City public schools. 180DC NYU is helping ESY NYC build marketing and communications strategies and recommend relevant structural changes.

Teach for America (TFA) aims to find, develop and mobilize outstanding leaders to work in low-income schools to grow and strengthen the movement for educational equity and excellence. Our team will help align TFA NY's strategy with their organization-wide 10-year plan and recommend ways to integrate the new roles they've created to strengthen internal processes and work streams.

Literacy Partners is a non-profit organization providing support to diverse and resilient families to close the achievement gap for children through a two-generation approach with free classes and workshops to help parents and caregivers develop literacy and language skills and child development programs to boost children’s school readiness and social growth. 180DC NYU is working with LP to purposefully recruit volunteers for the various programs and build out their entire volunteer management lifecycle.

The Acacia Network provides a wide range of community services to Latinx populations in NYC. 180DC NYU is working with the ACDP, an affiliate of the network, to identify alternative revenue streams and to develop a 5 year strategic plan for their new college readiness programs.

Smile Train is an NGO that works on providing free cleft surgeries globally, to identify areas of opportunities for their nutrition services program. Through extensive data analysis and mapping using geospatial imaging software like ArcGIS, our team will identify top expansion targets by continent and conduct further country-level deep dives.

Ariva is a New York City-based nonprofit that offers financial counseling and tax preparation services in pursuit of greater economic justice. Their programs are free and rely on volunteers, and 180 is helping to improve their volunteer training processes with technology and best practice analysis.

The Nature Conservancy has employed scientists and citizens since 1975 to launch environmental conservation projects in over 70 countries and territories. To optimize TNC's partnership with the TechStars accelerator, 180DC NYU is collaborating with TNC to strategize an engagement model.


The WellLife Network is a Queens-based nonprofit dedicated to assisting individuals facing developmental disabilities and mental illness. They provide a wide variety of services licensed by the New York State Office of Mental Health (NYSOMH) such as psychiatric rehabilitation, case management, and residential services.

New York Landmarks Conservancy is a long standing non-profit dedicated to preserving, revitalizing, and reusing New York's architecturally significant buildings. Since it's founding, NYLC has provided over $40 million in grants and loans, servicing sites like the U.S. Custom House and Survivors Staircase.


A2IM is a non profit that is a collective voice for the  independent music industry. They promote growth, awareness, and opportunities for independent music production through advocacy, education, and community.

Diag-Nose Medical is a healthcare startup aiming to improve patient care and reduce antibiotic over-prescription. They provide an accessible, non-invasive, and inexpensive way to diagnose sinusitis through a self-testing product to properly diagnose bacterial infections.

Enable My Child seeks to improve the quality and access to therapy by providing affordable, evidence-based, and professional pediatric care to children across the nation. It’s sister organization, Enable My Future, focuses on providing virtual counseling services and psychological evaluations to tackle the increasing need for mental health services in universities, workplaces, and communities.

The National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is an environmental action group that seeks to ensure the rights of all people to air, water, and the wild across the world. Through the use of research, data, and science, the organization inspires its partners, its supporters, and the communities as to advocate for policies promoting environmental protection.

Kageno seeks to transform impoverished communities into places of opportunity and hope through the development of self-sustaining, community-directed programs in Education, Health, Ventures (Income Generation), and Environment. By working with the communities rather than giving simple aid or handouts Kageno contributes towards their sustainable development.

Rethink Food NYC is a non-profit based in Brooklyn, NY. It takes unused, excess food from restaurants and other food purveyors, and repurposes it into nutritious meals for human service organizations around the city. It has collected more than 100,000 pounds of food and served over 130,000 meals.

Her Justice is a New York City-based nonprofit that provides pro-bono legal services to underprivileged women in NYC, including court representation, brief services, advice, and counsel. Her Justice employs a team of staff attorneys and volunteer lawyers, and have served 9,000+ clients with 76,000+ hours of services provided.

Teach for America (TFA) aims to enlist, develop, and mobilize recruited college graduates from top universities to grow and strengthen the movement for educational equity and excellence. Selected members, known as “Peace Corps Members” commit to teaching at one of the 52 low-income communities that the organization serves. TFA currently has a network of over 60,000 alumni and corps members across the USA.

Reading Partners mobilizes communities to provide students with the proven, individualized reading support they need to read at grade level by fourth grade. The organization partners with under-resourced schools and engages volunteer reading partners to work one-on-one with students who struggle with reading. So far, they have delivered individualized reading tutoring to more than 11,200 students in 225 elementary schools.

Crisis Text Line is a global nonprofit organization that provides free crisis intervention via SMS message. Founded in 2013, the organization provides 24/7 service throughout the U.S. and Canada. Through its triage system, in which conversations are assessed by an algorithm for severity and queued accordingly, Crisis Text Line has processed over 86 million text messages.

EcoHealth Alliance uses a cohesive “One Health” approach to protect wildlife, environmental, and public health, with active projects in over thirty countries. Working with policymakers in an advisory capacity, EcoHealth Alliance also offers ecosystem and public health expertise to organization and governmental bodies, such as the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

American Cancer Society (ACS) is a nationwide voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer through funding cancer research, supporting patients, and spreading awareness. They have invested $4.6B into funding and conducting cancer research since 1946 and lead 2 million volunteers in over 5,000 communities and in 250 regional offices.

Founded in 2011, Harlem Grown is an independent, non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire youth to lead healthy and ambitious lives through mentorship and hands-on education in urban farming, sustainability, and nutrition. The organization operates ten local urban agriculture facilities, increases access to and knowledge of healthy food for Harlem residents, and provides garden-based development programs to Harlem youth.

New York Blood Center (NYBC) is one of the largest independent, community-based, nonprofit blood centers in the US. The organization is a patient-focused healthcare resource and global change agent, driven by a passionate enthusiasm to strengthen diverse communities, and building on a substantial legacy of innovation. NYBC ensures that approximately 2,000 units of blood products are collected each day and distributed to more than 20 million people.

Children of Promise, NYC (CPNYC) is the first and only after-school program and summer day camp designed to meet the needs, interests and concerns of children left behind by a parent serving time in prison. The agency has developed broad collaborative relationships and community partnerships and established its own innovative and holistic model, providing services to over 1,500 children and their families.

Ride Health is an early-stage company focused on improving access to care for patients who face transportation barriers. The company has developed a software platform that helps providers coordinate transportation on behalf of such patients. The solution improves the patient and care navigator experience, reduces no-shows and delayed discharges, and avoids hospitalizations through improved access to care, engagement, and compliance.

The Sahana Software Foundation (SSF) develops open source software and provides emergency management services that help solve concrete problems and bring efficiencies to disaster response coordination between governments, aid organizations, civil society, and the victims themselves.

Founded in 2013, Eat Offbeat delivers authentic and home-style ethnic meals that are conceived, prepared and delivered by refugees resettled in NYC. Clients include companies like Casper, Kickstarter, Google, and Estee Lauder, who have hired Eat Offbeat for office lunches, team meetings, and events. Eat Offbeat hopes to change the dialogue around refugees and cultural exchange for the better.

Girls Who Code is a non-profit organization dedicated to closing the gender gap in technology by supporting and increasing the number of women in computer science. Girls Who Code offers free summer and after-school programs to over 12,000 female middle and high school students across the United States.

Upsolve.png

Currently, 19 million households qualify for bankruptcy, but only 0.5 million households file due to large legal costs and tedious paperwork. Upsolve seeks to help low income Americans by automating personal bankruptcy and partners with legal-aid clinics across the country. To date, Upsolve has worked to erase over $1.5 million dollars in debt.

Founded by the American Heart Association and Clinton Foundation, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation seeks to promote lifelong healthy habits in children through community and school-based initiatives. Its Healthy Schools Program has reached more than 18 million students, primarily from low-income populations, across 31,000 schools.

Founded in 2004 by current CEO Bishop Taylor and Debra-Ellen Glickstein, Long Island City based Urban Upbound (formerly the East River Development Alliance) is a non-profit organization that uses a grassroots community organizing approach to provide residents of public housing neighborhoods in New York City the tools and resources to break cycles of poverty.

The Rainforest Alliance is a non-profit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. At the heart of the Rainforest Alliance’s approach is the understanding that the health of the land is inextricably connected to the wellbeing of those who depend on it for their livelihoods.

 The Sylvia Center (TSC) operates in communities in New York City and Upstate New York with the goal of encouraging young students and their families to eat and live healthier. The key to the non-profit's success is teaching through hands-on experiences around sourcing and preparing healthy meals. TSC teaches meaningful strategies for nutritious cooking and eating through a variety of thoughtful programs.

Founded in 1999 as the second urban squash program in the United States, StreetSquash is a non-profit organization based in New York City that administers comprehensive youth enrichment after-school programs in Harlem and Newark. Their programs combine academic tutoring, squash instruction, community service, college preparation, mentorship, and leadership development for young people in the 11-24 age range.

NYU Stern is one of the world's premier business schools and the Office of Student Engagement (OSE) assists undergraduate students in all non-academic student-related activities. The OSE's vision is to encourage the personal growth and development of students to foster a vibrant Stern community.

Pencils of Promise (PoP) is a for-purpose organization that creates schools, programs and communities around the common goal of making education accessible for all in Ghana, Guatemala, Laos and Nicaragua. All PoP facilities are built using locally-sourced materials and labor. PoP further engages with the local community through ongoing teacher training programs, progression scholarships, and WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) programming.  

Venture for America is a non-profit organization that works to spur job creation and economic growth by creating a pathway for the best and brightest students to enter into entrepreneurship. Founded in 2010, the organization runs a two-year fellowship program that trains recent college graduates from top universities and then sends them to work for startups in developing cities, where their hard work and passion for value creation has already contributed to the creation of over 2,000 jobs in cities that need it most.

Knock, Knock Give a Sock is an NYU-founded non-profit that collects socks from corporations and on college campuses for the homeless. They also host Meet Your Neighbor dinners, where students, professionals, and the homeless share a meal and their stories in order to overcome the stigmas surrounding homelessness.  

With roots dating back to the War of 1812, Cornerstone Family Programs works to strengthen communities and improve greater civic welfare. Cornerstone’s initiatives focus on giving children the best start in life, keeping older adults independent, building and maintaining healthy families, and preventing substance abuse. The organization's services reach over 10,000 children, families, and seniors across 12 different locations annually.

CWFE is dedicated to providing clean water access to schools and other institutions across West Africa. The organization implements water infrastructure and filtration systems with a focus on sustainability, community engagement, and affordability. Since its inception in 2012, CWFE has provided 6,000,000 cumulative liters of clean water.

Idealist is a non-profit organization that aims to connect people looking to create an impact with volunteer opportunities worldwide, moving potential do-gooders “from intention to action”. The organization hosts an online platform where non-profits can list volunteer opportunities, internships, and full time jobs, among others, to Idealist’s database. 

Nazareth Housing is New York City-based housing & emergency shelter non-profit focused on serving low-income families in the community. Additionally, the organization provides workshops aimed at building financial literacy, family bonds, and general life skills, and also operates a food pantry and a furniture donation service, all in the Lower East Side.

Finding the Fabulous is a non-profit organization that seeks to advance the next generation of female leaders and role models. The organization helps girls, ages 5-18, flight core challenges including fear, bullying, and media pressure, and instead focus on building positive qualities including confidence, self-respect, inner beauty and ambition. Their mission is reunite girls with fearless attitudes and revolutionary futures.

Think Coffee is a Manhattan-based coffee company, playing an activist role as a proponent of ethical sourcing practices. In addition to donating 10% of annual net income to fair wage charities, Think works to convince consumers on the benefits of ethically sourced coffee beans, advocating for responsible and informed consumption. 180 Degrees Consulting began its engagement with Think Coffee in September of 2014.

The Salvation Army, as one of the oldest charities in the world, has taken a global approach to humanitarian aid. With its defined purpose, “to feed, to clothe, to comfort and to care,” the organization leads initiatives in disaster relief, food distribution, personal rehabilitation, and anti-human trafficking. 180 Degrees Consulting has now advised The Salvation Army on two consecutive engagements, throughout the fall and spring of 2015.

Rescuing Leftover Cuisine is one of New York City’s fastest growing food rescues. The organization, founded by an NYU graduate and former J.P. Morgan banker, works with individual donors, restaurant partners, and dining halls to reallocate excess food to those in need. 180 Degrees Consulting advised Rescuing Leftover Cuisine throughout the spring of 2015.

Lifebeat, a Viacom sponsored non-profit, works with celebrities in the music industry to raise awareness around sexual health and HIV/AIDS. The organization reaches at-risk youth by accompanying music artists on international tours, as well as sponsoring HIV testing initiatives throughout the greater Manhattan area. 180 Degrees Consulting advised Lifebeat throughout the spring of 2015.

Trip of a Lifetime, a local NYC non-profit started by an NYU graduate, helps students gain a better understanding of the world by sending them on travel trips outside of their local communities. It aims to inspire under-privileged students and encourage them to pursue their passions through travel. 180 Degrees Consulting advised Trip of a Lifetime throughout the spring of 2015.

Kiva, an international microfinance platform, is widely recognized as one of the most disruptive impact organizations in the world. Kiva’s platform connects lenders in developed nations with entrepreneurs in developing countries in order to facilitate interest-free loans that promote economic development. 180 Degrees Consulting began an engagement with Kiva in September of 2015.

The Center for Family Life, a branch of SCO’s family of services, aims to promote positive outcomes for children, adults and families in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn. The organization provides family counseling, foster care, employment, and school-based services for at-risk communities. 180 Degrees Consulting was retained by CFL in the fall of 2015.
